Toccoa, GA – Wild Adventures & side trips



While no visit to Toccoa would be complete without checking out the Military Museum or hiking up Curahee, there are a lot of other fun reasons to extend your stay in one of northeast Georgia’s premier wild places.




We all know about Niagara, but at nearly 190 feet, tiny Toccoa falls can look those famous falls in the eye. Though a relative trickle, the waters from Toccoa Falls feed a small stream that winds through the pastoral campus of Toccoa Falls College.




Thousands of nature lovers cruise over to the campus of this small Christian college just off Highway 17A each year just to take in the beauty of the natural setting. Hike the short path to the falls and be rewarded with a view that will likely bring a gasp to your lips and a camera to your eye. Toccoa Falls College is located at 107 N. Once the home of a wealthy plantation owner called Devereaux Jarrett, Traveler’s Rest is now a state historic site. Way back in 1833, Jarrett noticed that the number of travelers to and through the area was steadily increasing. He purchased the property and converted the boarding house into the center of a thriving farmstead. Today, visitors can come for to stroll the grounds and take a guided tour of the plantation house. Inside you will find original furnishings, many made by local craftsman, Caleb Shaw. Traveler’s Rest is closed on Mondays except for Memorial, Independence and Labor Day weekends.   • Colonel Sink Trail runs 3 milesup Currahee Mountain. Find the trailhead almost exactly 3 miles away from the Military Museum on Currahee Street.
  • Panther Creek Trail offers a moderate 3.5-mile hike along Panther Creek (great trout fishing) and rewards hikers with a view of beautiful Panther Creek Falls. The trail winds through stands of hemlock and white pine. Expect some rock scrambling. Located in the Panther Creek Recreation Area, 8 miles north of Hollywood, GA on Old US-441 (between Clarksville and Tallulah Falls).
  • Frady Branch Trail System combines 4 interlocking trails into a 13.4-mile hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking opportunity. The trailhead is located on Highway 184 south of Currahee Mountain.
  • Broad River Trail offers a somewhat simpler hike, a pleasant four-mile stroll across relatively level terrain. The trailhead is located at the Lake Russell Wildlife Management Area just off Highway 123W outside of Toccoa.
  • Locust Stake ATV Trail System is a must for ATV and OHV riders. Take Currahee Street (H-184) south out of Toccoa to the 123W/17 intersection. Take 17 on the right for about 10 miles then look for the signs.
